Rancho Palos Verdes, CA - Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in Rancho Palos Verdes following a devastating landslide that has caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure.

The landslide, which occurred on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, has forced the evacuation of over 1,000 residents from their homes. The affected area includes the Portuguese Bend Landslide, a known geological hazard zone.

According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the landslide has caused significant damage to at least 20 homes, with several more at risk of collapse. Roads and utilities have also been damaged, making access to the area difficult.

Governor's State of Emergency

Governor Newsom's declaration of a state of emergency allows state agencies to provide immediate assistance to Rancho Palos Verdes, including funding for emergency response, debris removal, and housing for displaced residents.

The declaration also activates the California Emergency Management Agency (CalEMA) to coordinate state resources with local and federal agencies.

Evacuation Orders

Residents in the affected area have been ordered to evacuate immediately. Evacuation centers have been established at the following locations:

  • Marymount California University (30800 Palos Verdes Dr. East, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275)
